Twitter Testing a New Moderation Feature to Help Users Fight Toxic Comments

According to a tweet from a security researcher and expert software unpacker, Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter is testing its new moderation feature, that will allow the users to hide unwanted comments on their tweets. The company itself confirmed the news that they are testing a new feature hide replies feature, such that the users will be able to hide replies to their tweets, through that feature.

The new feature will let the users hide comments on their tweets, but the comments won’t be permanently hidden, and other users can also see the comments by simply clicking a button on the tweet, that may say See Replies or so. The feature will also allow the users to unhide the tweets from the history and report any of the ‘bad’ replies on them, any time.

The Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, also had admitted in a statement last year, that the company has been fighting with a lot of negativity in the user conversations, which is leading to abuse, harassment, and the spread of misinformation, which clearly is not the intentions of the company.

“People who start interesting conversations on Twitter are really important to us, and we want to empower them to make the conversations they start as healthy as possible by giving them some control,” Michelle Yasmeen Haq, the senior product manager, said in tweet thread, confirming the news, “We already see people trying to keep their conversations healthy by using block, mute, and report, but these tools don’t always address the issue. Block and mute only change the experience of the blocker, and report only works for the content that violates our policies.”

Although Twitter has already provided its users with the mute, block, and report options, the hide replies option will help them show their disagreement with the replies on their tweet, and signal the audience that the conversation was becoming toxic.

There have been many features that Twitter tested but never implemented. Although the hide replies features seem to be quite useful, it only depends on the company whether it will publish the feature or not.

Google’s G Suite & Target Joins the List of the Victims of Ongoing Bitcoin Scam

After the breach into the twitter accounts of the US and Israeli politicians, as well as the official account of the Indian Consulate in Frankfurt, on Monday, a group of hackers hacked the official Twitter account of the retail giant Target on the very next day.

In the brief time of half an hour, the hackers posted a fake tweet on the account to promote a malicious cryptocurrency giveaway. The fake giveaway’s worth was 5000 BTC (approx. $31 million), that was put on to the tweet with a QR code, Bitcoin address, and line of text that claims it will return deposits tenfold, to lure the naive investors. The tweet addressed the 1.92 million followers of Target’s twitter account and had asked them to send BTC on the given address, to become a part of the giveaway.

The hackers were smart enough, to put some replies on the tweet from some high-profile accounts, to make the tweet look more legit and convincing. The hacking lasted for a small time, and according to the Bitcoin insiders, the hackers were able to arrange not more than a handful of BTC from the followers.

In such a small time, the media and other parties got notice of the incident, and Target took control over its account back, just after thirty minutes of hacking and posted another tweet, that confirmed the hack. The tweet read, “Early this morning, Target’s Twitter account was inappropriately accessed. The access lasted for approximately half an hour and one fake tweet was posted during that time about a Bitcoin scam.”

After taking the control over its Twitter account, Target is still in active discussions with the social media platform, regarding the matter. Not more than a few hours passed for the Target’s twitter hack, another hack came into light when another major account i.e., the official Twitter account for Google’s G Suite, a group of software/products that includes Drive, Docs, Gmail, Hangouts, and others, was hacked by the hackers. The hackers posted a similar fake tweet on the account that mentioned a giveaway of 10000 BTC to the winners of the giveaway. The tweet included a similar link along with an image of a QR code and Bitcoin address. Google was quick to take down the tweet, and it still has to confirm the breach.

Other breaches like the hacking of the official account of Elon Musk and the major European film company, Pathé, which took place earlier this month, and TV Chef, Tyler Florence had also occurred around last month, and now Target as well as Google has also joined the list. For now, there has been no other news of any other hacking of any account, and we can expect that Twitter will now be more focused on the security of the accounts of its users.

Facebook, Instagram and many other social media platforms have included the status feature to their inbox that shows if the user is currently active or not. Facebook also allows the user to choose between showing its status to its followers or not.

On 1 September 2018, Jack Dorsey the CEO of Twitter also talked about some new features like Presence, to be added to Twitter, through one of his tweets. He wrote, “Playing with some new Twitter features: presence (who else is on Twitter right now?) and threading (easier to read convos)”.

As he has talked about Presence and Threading, it clearly shows that those two features are somewhat similar to the Facebook’s Messenger’s features. With Presence, you will be able to see all the online users and you can easily engage with them. Also, Threading will help you follow or stick to a particular thread of conversation, in an easier way as compared to the current embed and click-through method.

Most of the Twitter users have given positive feedback to the threading feature as they mentioned that with the present thread it is difficult to go through all the tweets using the @reply and is a bit annoying. But, most of the users disliked the Presence feature as showing the other users the online status can be disturbing. Upon which the Twitter’s head of product Sara Haider replied, “would definitely want you to have full control over sharing your presence.”

It means that the user will be able to update its status according to one’s will. According to Dorsey’s tweet, Twitter is only performing the test right now and he has not mentioned the particular date when the new features will roll out on Twitter.

Jack Dorsey – The Founder of Twitter

Today, every successful entrepreneur aims towards giving the world something which will make the lives of people easier. In order to achieve success, an entrepreneur must think of benefitting the people in any way possible. Therefore, with the help of technology, several apps are being launched which are bringing the world closer. One such entrepreneur is Jack Dorsey, who has made a tremendous contribution to bringing the world closer with his revolutionary ideas.

Early Life

Born on 19th November 1976 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Jack Dorsey was a computer lover from the early years of his life. His parents Tim and Marcia Dorsey continuously supported and encouraged his passion for computers. Tim worked as an engineer in a company manufacturing mass spectrometers, while Marcia was a housewife.

In his teenage years, Jack spent hours studying the early versions of IBM. His first ambitious idea was to build a live map of New York City, displaying small moving dots, which would represent ambulances, taxis, police vehicles, fire brigades, etc. After moving to a new place Jack would go on long late night walks in the city to get a visual idea for his map.

As a child, Jack faced a stuttering problem while speaking, so he used to keep quiet most of the time. But, taking control over this weakness was what made him a survivor and ready to face more difficult challenges and how to solve them. Therefore, he would sign up for various oratory competitions. After several failed attempts, he finally managed to speak normally.

Jack attended high school at Bishop DuBourg in St. Louis, Missouri. Then he further went to attend the University of Missouri of Science and Technology, but, soon transferred to New York University. He was an active member of computer club during his high school. Jack’s first computer programming experience was at the age of 14 when he wrote few programs for taxi dispatching and firefighting services. He made this programs using an open source platform and they are still used by some taxi companies even today.

Early Career

Jack initially applied for an internship at Mira Digital Publishing Company in the summer of 1991. And just within a few weeks, he was leading a team of programmers. This was quite a sight when a teenager was leading a team in their thirties. His second company was Dispatch Management Services Corp. Jack got a job at this company in an unusual way. He hacked the company’s website and contacted the manager explaining the loophole in their company’s software. He was immediately hired as a programmer and here’s where Jack was first introduced to an idea which would later become biggest social networking platform – Short Messaging Services (SMS). He also learned about a program through which a dispatcher could track the movements of couriers in real time.

This led him to move to Oakland and start his own company of dispatching taxis and emergency services, through the internet. However, the dot-com bubble left him jobless and for the next five years, he focused on freelancing.

Birth of Twitter

Later, with the idea of SMS, he was hired by ODEO, which specialized in Internet Startups. Here Jack met other talented programmers including Biz Stone. Jack discussed his idea of short messaging services with Stone, and they both went on to make the first prototype of Twitter. On March 21, 2006, Twitter took first entry into the microblogging service when Jack twitted the very first tweet, “just setting up my twttr”. The service was officially launched for the public in June 2006.

When ODEO ran into financial crises, it also caused a funding problem for Twitter. But, Fred Wilson soon showed interest in the company and offered Jack about a half-million dollars cheque. Later, Evan Williams and Noah Glass also came aboard Twitter. As per a recent survey, by SimilarWeb analytics tool, Twitter gets 2.2 billion visits per month.

Founder of Square

Jack did not stop at the success of Twitter but moved on to create some more exciting projects. His next successful venture was set up in 2010 called Square – a café POS system and mobile payment company. The unique feature of this product is its size. It is small square-sized hardware, which is inserted into the headphone jack. It has a magnetic reader to read credit/debit cards. Due to its small size and great potential Starbucks invested $25 million, on August 8th, 2012 in Square.

Jack Dorsey is counted as one of the most successful and genius people in the world. As of 2015, his net worth was calculated to be $2.3 billion. Today, Twitter is actively used by politicians, celebrities, and artists across the globe. And, Square is on the path to change the mobile payments industry.

Biz Stone- From An Undergraduate To A Net Worth Of US$200 Million

A creative mind knows no boundaries. This statement is as true as it sounds. A person with even a slightest bend towards creativity will always be on the edge of his mind to introduce a unique idea into this world. Born on March 10, 1974, Christopher Isaac Stone, also known as Biz Stone, is an American entrepreneur and one of the co-founder of world’s popular microblogging app Twitter. Stone is a perfect example of a kid who badly wanted to enter the tech-business world. His first start-up was way back in 1999 named as Xanga. It is a weblogs, photoblogs, and social networking profiles host.

Stone attended three educational institutions during his academic phase. He initially graduated from Wellesley High School and then he attended Northeastern University and University of Massachusetts, Boston. Although attended, Stone did not complete his graduation in either of them. He was a nerd from high-school itself and was eager to break into the technological industry.

The Story of Co-founding Twitter
To be an entrepreneur you’ve to be hundred times smarter than everyone. Biz Stone gripped this formula into his mind and applied it at the very early stages in his career. Stone was one of the people working in the building phases of Twitter along with the man behind the idea i.e. Eve Williams while working on Odeo, which was a pod-cast startup. One fine day, Stone mailed Eve and asked a courageous question, “Maybe this is inappropriate, but if I don’t ask, I’ll never know! What do you envision my title to be? Is there a chance I could be called the co-founder?”

This question, a dare in itself, set a mutual understanding between Eve Williams and Biz Stone which would further help them grow the company multiple folds. Eve, after lots of thought turmoil, finally decided to take Stone on board as the ‘co-founder’ of Twitter and gave him 3% share in the company.

A Multi-level Entrepreneur
Biz Stone has never experienced taking a halt in his career. From the beginning itself he had engrossed himself into multiple businesses. He is a leading investor and encouraging advisor in the startup community. He sits on the board of director chair at Beyond Meat, Medium, Workpop and Polaroid Swing. Stone has worked for Google for two years from 2003 to 2005. Stone own’s a start-up, Jelly, a one-of-a-kind search engine which would have a person to answer every question posted on it.

Stone’s creative level is not just bound to tech-space but to the visual storytelling medium too. He, in collaboration with Ron Howard and Canon USA, debuted as a director for a short film titled Evermore. Along with Natalie Portman, Stone was an Executive Producer of the documentary Eating Animals. For some personal reasons Stone left Twitter some years back but has recently, in May 2015, announced his comeback in Twitter. Stone was awarded the Doctor of Laws degree by the Babson College in 2011. He has published three informational books titled Blogging Genius Strategies for Instant Web Content in 2011, Who Let The Blogs Out? In 2004, and Things a Little Bird Told me in 2014. Stone is married to Livia and has a son Jacob and currently resides in Marin County, California.
